Russia and PepsiCo have a long, storied history dating back to 1959 when Nikita Khrushchev had his picture snapped enjoying a Pepsi during the American National Exhibition in Moscow under the watchful eye of then-U.S. Vice President Richard Nixon. The Exhibition provided an extraordinary six-week interlude to the Cold War and gave three million Soviets their first taste of American culture.
For Donald M. Kendall, then the 38-year-old head of Pepsi-Cola International and today a former PepsiCo chairman and CEO, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sample his product in the Soviet Union, which did not allow the sale of American consumer brands. It also was the first step in Kendall?s 15-year effort to establish Pepsi as the first Western consumer product made and sold in the Soviet Union.
Kendall returns to Moscow this month with PepsiCo Chairman and CEO Indra Nooyi to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Exhibition.
