Visiting through the U.S. Consulate Office in India, a team of delegates recently toured the PepsiCo India Foods plant in Kolkata. U.S. Senators Mark Warner, Michael Bennet, Tom Udall and Dean Thomson joined other U.S. government officials as the Kolkata Foods team showcased the plant's agro operations and community outreach.
Partha Gangopadhyay, head of the Kolkata plant, introduced the visitors to work being done by PepsiCo in the neighboring community. The team met some Self Help Groups (SHGs) of women from low socio-economic backgrounds who were undergoing a skill training course supported by PepsiCo. The delegates also interacted with underprivileged children studying in a school run by the SHGs.
Partha also presented the agro and manufacturing operations of Kolkata plant and its endeavor to ensure green renewable source of energy through the use of a rice husk boiler. The delegates also met with local farmers to understand the agro operations carried out by PepsiCo in West Bengal. At the end of the visit, Sen. Warner closed with a speech on how "PepsiCo is forging ahead in East India, while ensuring its responsibilities towards the environment and the community at large."
