How Gatorade turned a dehydration problem into a 60-year science-backed legacy

From college sidelines to daily routines, Gatorade continues to build on the science that shaped the brand from the start.

Before Gatorade became one of the world’s most recognizable hydration brands, it started as a solution to a problem facing college athletes in the Florida heat.

The brand’s origin story began in 1965 when a University of Florida assistant coach questioned why so many of his football players were struggling during their games. A group of UF physicians led by Dr. Robert Cade set out to find the answer. They discovered that the players weren’t properly hydrated: Electrolytes they lost while sweating weren’t being replaced, nor were the carbohydrates needed to fuel working muscles. They developed a drink to replenish those important nutrients — dubbing the concoction “Gatorade,” a nod to the university’s mascot — and the team’s fortunes reversed. They went on to win the 1966 Orange Bowl, and the drink sparked a hydration revolution.

As the UF football team continued to outplay opponents even in the sweltering heat, Gatorade quickly gained wider attention. One 1966 Florida Times-Union headline declared, “One Lil’ Swig of That Kickapoo Juice and Biff, Bam, Sock — It’s Gators, 8-2.”

In 1967, a deal was struck to begin producing and selling the drink across the United States. And as demand grew, the brand expanded beyond college athletics and became increasingly associated with sports at every level, from professional leagues to young competitors. The now-familiar bolt logo was first introduced in 1973, and by the 1980s Gatorade’s reach expanded to international markets.

In 1983, the company that produced Gatorade, Stokely-Van Camp, was acquired by the Quaker Oats Company. New flavors and product innovations followed, as did moments that cemented the brand’s place in pop culture — from celebrity spokespeople and major advertising to the tradition of the Gatorade “dunk.”

The brand also committed itself to furthering sports science: In 1985, it established the Gatorade Exercise Physiology Lab, and then in 1988, it expanded and was renamed the Gatorade Sports Science Institute (GSSI), bringing together experts dedicated to studying sports nutrition, hydration, and athletic performance. Since its inception, GSSI has continued its mission of helping people optimize their performance, reinforcing the scientific foundation that inspired the drink's creation two decades earlier.

Another major milestone came in 2001, when the Quaker Oats Company became part of PepsiCo. The move brought Gatorade into a portfolio that included many of the world's best-known food and beverage brands.

Gatorade has since expanded way beyond the original thirst quencher. Today, you can find a variety of ready-to-drink offerings, like Gatorade Zero and Gatorlyte, as well as electrolyte powders, equipment, and more. The brand’s latest innovation is Gatorade Lower Sugar, with no artificial flavors, sweeteners or colors and 75% less sugar than Gatorade Thirst Quencher.

Today, over 60 years after it was first invented, Gatorade products are enjoyed by consumers around the world from athletes fueling for a big game to people looking to stay hydrated throughout the day. Gatorade’s science-backed foundation is now guiding its next chapter.

In 2026, the brand announced a renewed focus on changing how people think about hydration — moving beyond the sidelines to meet a broader range of everyday needs. As more people look for hydration options that fit different routines, activities, and wellness goals, Gatorade is expanding its portfolio while continuing to build on the performance science that has defined the brand since 1965.

What began as an initiative to help a college football team perform in the Florida heat has grown into a global hydration platform, built on science, innovation, and performance — and now evolving for a generation that sees hydration as part of everyday life.
